Poison Idea: Jerry A. (vocals), Tom Roberts (guitar), Chris Tense (bass), Dean Johnson (drums).

This is an awesome record, hands down the most brutal U.S. hardcore to come out between Negative Approach and Infest. Incredibly tight, angry, and unrelenting -- there's only about 1/3 of a second pause between each track. The guitar is crazy and unpredictable, but always held together by the drums. Good lyrics too. The whole EP is very consistant; there's really no filler in any of the 13 songs. I'd have to say my favorite is "Cult Band." The intro to this one is great... You really can't go wrong with this one.

No one but Koro has matched the unrelenting madness of this record. Without stopping to catch their breath, Poison Idea dropped 13 stellar hardcore songs that seem to be held together by pure adrenaline. They also get points for varying the tempo without losing any of the impact that their high-velocity songs have. There's no point saying more, this record speaks for itself. Total fucking classic.

RECORD COLLECTORS ARE PRETENTIOUS ASSHOLES 12" (Fatal Erection, 1984)

9. Rich Get Richer - 1:25
10. Don't Like It Here - 1:50
11. Die on Your Knees - 2:45
12. Time to Go - 2:03

Still fast hardcore, but not as crazy and unpredictable as the first EP. The band is trying to write more complex songs, longer riffs, etc. There's hints of melody and the more standard song structure that would come later. It's pretty good, but not essential. Reissues come with a bunch more songs.

11. Young Lord

Shit, how could Poison Idea be so good already? This is their 1982 demo, released on vinyl in 1989, and it pretty much blows most other "hardcore" records clear out of the water. Granted, the sound is raw (sometimes you can barely hear the drums), but if you have the Pick Your King 7", you should know the songs anyway. This also includes a few great songs ("Bounce the Rubble", "All Right", etc.) that Poison Idea never recorded again. If you like Pick Your King (and you should), you'll like this, too. Apparently the "Produced by Joan Jett" was something else (besides the cover design) they stole from the Germs record.

A really large collection of unreleased songs, alternate versions, and live stuff, from the early- to mid-eighties. Most of it is great (although a lot of the songs are available elsewhere), and the overall sound quality is good. The booklet doesn't have lyrics or any information on where or when the different songs were recorded unfortunately. Something strange: On the tracklist songs 9 and 19 are called "This Thing Called Progress", but it's actually "Bounce the Rubble" - a great song from their 1982 demo.
